Today was the day for food samples being offered at Costco Hawaii Kai. I don't bother with food samples because it's just not my thing.
Others like it so much that they converge on the samples and crowd the aisles. I noticed a tall young Asian boy wearing a teri-cloth polo shirt, slacks, and slip-ons going to every sample table and trying each one. After which, he would say to the volunteer, " I cannot have this. I have allergies, you know? I might have to sue you!"The poor vendor would panic because most of them are special needs, so they didn't know any better. However, the young man finally made his way to the spicy sushi sample table. After inhaling one whole roll, he pontificated yet again that he was indeed allergic and that he would sue the vendor and Costco itself. The young Asian man didn't know that the old Japanese woman serving the samples was also a retired cafeteria manager at a nearby elementary school.
"I cannot have this kind, I get allergies, you know? I'm going to have to sue you, and Costco!" He exclaimed.
"Then why you eat the sushi if you get allergies?" The former cafeteria manager asked pointedly.
"Whatchoo, mean?" The young Asian man asked.
"You must be stupid if you know you're allergic to sushi and you still like eat um, right?" She asked. "Otherwise, you no mo' allergies and you just trying fo' be one asshole, right?"
Swiftly, the old cafeteria manager removed her cap and swatted the young Asian man over the head with it. "Come here so I can punch you! Come closer, so I can punch your face! Come here, gunfunnit you!"
The young Asian man looked absolutely shocked, pretending he hadn't done anything wrong to irritate the old woman. Pleading for help and eventually screaming as he ran away. He finally found the manager and told him about the assault, practically dragging the authority figure to the spot where the incident took place. The old Japanese lady wasn't there. The young Asian man gave the manager a detailed description of the old Japanese woman, and then the light came on for the manager.
"I know who you're talking about," the manager nodded. "That's Terrylyn Okawa. She used to come here with her special needs students before, handing out samples. She would get mad when anybody made trouble for her special needs kids. She passed away a couple of years ago, but some people say they see her if somebody makes trouble. Sounds like that's what you were doing?"
"No, I wasn't," the young Asian man said.
"We have it on camera," the manager said, showing him the video. "Get out before you get sued!"
